WellRead's June Selection: Sleep by Honor Jones
We love selecting a debut title at WellRead and introducing our readers to a new writer. This month’s selection, Sleep by Honor Jones, contains all of the good stuff of our usual selections: interpersonal relationships, social commentary and introspection. Get cozy!
This month we follow protagonist Margaret – a newly-divorced mother – as she returns to her childhood home and confronts the secrets of the place in which she grew up. Together, we grow to understand the ways that Margaret was failed by her parents, and the inevitability of her own failings. It is a tender portrait of our protagonist’s attempt to reconcile past and present and the cyclical nature of motherhood and childhood.
Honor Jones captures the complexities of familial relationships with elegance and honesty. Ann Patchett calls Sleep ‘a haunting, beautiful novel’ and long-term WellRead subscribers will know, Ann’s is a word you can trust.
There’s a trigger warning on this one, with mention of sexual abuse. Tread carefully.
We hope this encourages self reflection.
