WellRead November Selection: Dusk by Robbie Arnott
For this month’s selection, you’re going to want to brew your preferred steaming hot beverage, clear the afternoon, and settle in somewhere comfy; once you’ve started Dusk, there is no putting it down until you’re finished.
One of Tasmania’s beloved homegrown talents, Robbie Arnott is known for his incredibly immersive prose, painting pictures of the Australian landscape that completely transport you. Although Dusk actually takes place in an unnamed part of Australia, we imagined it to be in Tasmania … it was snowy and dark and atmospheric … we could practically see our breath as we read.
Set in the early years of Australia’s colonial history, there’s suspense, there’s a tight sibling bond between the two twins – Iris and Floyd –, a deadly puma on the loose and haunting back stories, of both the people and the land. Our hearts were in our mouths for the second half of this tale of predator and prey.
We are Robbie Arnott devotees through and through and we hope that, if you haven’t read any of his other novels, your experience of Dusk makes you just as much of a fan.
