WellRead August Selection: The Echoes by Evie Wyld
When we heard that Evie Wyld had a new novel coming we were ravenous for it. If you’ve had the pleasure of delving into her past works, you would know them to be atmospheric, transportive and unsettling in ways you can’t always pinpoint straight off the bat.
Carrying a powerful track record, Wyld has previously won the Encore Award (2013), the Miles Franklin Award (2014) and the Stella Prize (2021), so our expectations were high.
We promise you, The Echoes delivers. It’s a story of life, death, grief, secrets and tangled webs of family failings. Set between London and rural Australia, Wyld captures the feeling of being pulled by two homelands, never really feeling at ease in either of them.
In The Echoes, our protagonist, Hannah, sits at the heart of the story, but around her there are more questions than there are answers. As Wyld peels back the layers on Hannah’s family, what is uncovered will leave you reeling. Through it all, Wyld demands that you pay attention to the small details, to remember that no one is ever only what they seem on the surface.
Oh, did we mention this is a ghost story? Hannah is haunted by ghosts of the past, family ghosts, ghosts created by broken systems and, of course, the ghost of her partner Max, whose own narration brings a little levity to the story.
We hope you love and are moved by The Echoes in equal measure.
