Reading questions for Women and Children First by Alina Grabowski:
- Each perspective is almost like a short story in itself, but we loved how the little details kept building until we felt we had a clearer picture of the town’s story. Which perspective do you wish you could read more of?
- Similarly, who did you feel was the most unreliable narrator? Why did you come to this conclusion?
- “It’s very rare. To be feeling something as deeply as someone else at the exact same time. Rarer still for you both to know it.” Each character we meet reveals a new connection to characters we’ve already met. So many of them seem to feel the same way about life and the events in the town, but each feels alone. Why do you think connection in this close-knit community is so difficult?
- Why do you think we don’t hear from Lucy herself in the ‘Pre’ section?
- "No one protected her. And this is something our own daughters will never understand. That we were never girls, not really. For a moment we were children, yes. But a girl and a child are not the same. A child is a pet. A girl is prey." How do you feel the novel broached the topics of vulnerability and responsibility?
