The Sydney Writers’ Festival for 2020 was recently cancelled. It was a cracking good program showcasing a bunch of brilliant and interesting writers who will be significantly impacted by the cancellation. We want to support these writers as much as we can and so have curated three packs of books to give you a taste of what the festival had to offer. See the other packs here.
What's included in Pack 2:
Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo
Twelve very different people, mostly black and female, more than a hundred years of change, and one sweeping, vibrant, glorious portrait of contemporary Britain. Bernardine Evaristo presents a gloriously new kind of history for this old country: ever-dynamic, ever-expanding and utterly irresistible. Winner of the Booker Prize 2019.
Uncanny Valley by Anna Wiener
The pull quote on the front of this book, from Rebecca Solnit no less, describes its author as like Joan Didion at a start-up. Do we even need to say more? Uncanny Valley recounts Anna Wiener's personal experiences working in Silicon Valley during its height of tech industry idealism. What follows is an expose of the "boyish camaraderie and ride-or-die corporate fealty...a Silicon Valley far over its head, one that enriched itself at the expense of the idyllic future it claimed to be building".
Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson
‘Good Lord, I can’t believe how good this book is…It’s wholly original. It’s also perfect…Wilson writes with such a light touch that it seems fairly impossible for the book to have a big emotional payoff. But there is, and that’s the brilliance of the novel—that it distracts you with these weirdo characters and mesmerizing and funny sentences and then hits you in a way you didn’t see coming. You’re laughing so hard you don’t even realize that you’ve suddenly caught fire.’ - Taffy Brodesser-Akner
