WellRead's July Selection: Dead Ends by Samantha Byres
Recently we heard Robbie Arnott (author of Dusk, our Nov ‘24 selection) speaking at the Sydney Writers’ Festival. When he was asked for a list of books he’d read and loved recently, he mentioned a few titles by New Zealand authors before reflecting that despite our close proximity, Australians don’t read a lot of New Zealand fiction, and vice versa.
We’re hoping this month’s pick will help to remedy this strange quirk we have down in this corner of the world.
Another jaw-dropping debut, Dead Ends explores – according to the author, Samantha Byres, herself – ”chance encounters with psychics, small-town teenage gloom, and chaotic love lives”. We follow Nell Jenkins as she returns to her hometown full of all its ghosts and questions, out of a sense of duty to her ailing mother.
Leaving a trail of chaos as she goes, Nell reckons with her past, attempts to take control of the narrative, and looks for the answers that she desperately needs in order to live.
Full of mystery, characters that will keep you on your toes, and plenty of bad decisions, we hope you enjoy meeting Nell and the town that raised her, for better or worse.
