WellRead September Kids Selection: Fairy Beach by Sheila Knaggs and Jennifer Falkner
We love fairies. We were raised on a healthy diet of Shirley Barber books that shaped the way we see the world, so we’re always looking for places fairies might be hiding.
We always wonder if a glistening spider web might be the perfect accessory for their beautiful outfits, or if a leaf might be just the right size for a cosy blanket. Everywhere we go, we’re looking for signs that fairies are hiding their treasures nearby.
Fairy Beach has opened up a whole new world for us, one where fairies sleep in conch shells, frolic in sandcastles and get their wings wet in the salty water. The beach has always been a magical place to be but now we can’t wait to discover all the places fairies might be hiding.
We hope you have as much fun looking for fairies as we do.

Extra things to think about and do:
-
If you were a fairy, would you like to live by the beach, in the bush or somewhere else? Draw a picture of what your fairy home might look like.
-
The fairies only come out after all the humans have gone home for the day, but it looks like the people left a few things behind that don’t belong on the beach. Can you spot them?
-
The fairies love playing hide and seek. Where would you hide if you were a fairy on the beach?
-
Can you find:
- Some cheeky fairies competing with seagulls for hot chips
- Helpful fireflies providing some light for the fairies
- A crab making use of the sandcastle
- A seaweed kite
- One fairy wearing a mini lifesavers cap
