WellRead January Selection: The Push by by Ashley Audrain

This month's selection belongs to a genre that we haven’t showcased a whole lot of and we chose it for two reasons: 1) When we asked you all what books you loved from our 2020 selections, the literary thriller Long Bright River was up there as one of your favourites; and 2) There’s something so gratifying about plowing through your first read of the year. And plow you will, this book is nothing short of addictive!

The Push is a psychological drama that combines page-turning tension with first-class writing to tell the story of the making and breaking of a family - and a woman whose experience of motherhood is nothing at all what she hoped for. The novel explores the cultural fetishisaton and myths of motherhood, nature versus nurture, expectation versus reality, the powerful impact of the past on the present and what it feels like to not be believed. This is a thriller, make no mistake, but one that probes deeply - and with huge amounts of intelligence - into what it means to be a mother.

Full disclosure, you will cancel plans and stay up to ridiculous hours to finish this book. It will unsettle you and it will challenge you. But it will also illuminate truths about human nature like only the best books can. We can’t wait to discuss it with you all!
