Book Club Questions for Hollow Air by Verity Borthwick

Book Club Questions for Hollow Air by Verity Borthwick

There is a tiny part of us that believes we’re cut out for life in isolation. Hollow Air reminds us we wouldn’t last a day.

WellRead's October 2025 selection was Hollow Air by Verity Borthwick. Split across two timelines, Hollow Air asks questions about isolation, trust, the space we take up on this earth, and the legacy we leave behind.

Use these discussion questions to engage with the book further, whether in a book club with friends or just on your own as you digest the story.

Reading questions for Hollow Air by Verity Borthwick:

  • Did you enjoy the chapters that explored Samuel and Tom’s story? Did you find it helped you to understand the mine, its history, and the community that depends on its success?

  • What did you make of Sarah and Scott’s relationship?

  • Once Sarah starts to realise there might be some foul play afoot, who did you suspect, and why?

  • What do you think of Cole? We have to admit, we still haven’t made our minds up!

  • Author Verity Borthwick comes to writing from a background in Geology and, in our opinion, you can tell! She’s informative without ever getting too deep in the weeds and losing us. How did you find the technical aspects of this story? Did you learn something new or a new perspective on our country?

  • We haven’t read a lot of fiction set in Far North Queensland and some of our WellRead team have spent time living up in Cairns (we know there are some WellRead subscribers up that way too!) – how did you feel about the sense of place created in Hollow Air? If you aren’t familiar with the area, did it transport you? If you know the area well, did it ring true for you?
